Meet the Mormons

Today I was reading my regular subscription to Lifehacker. They often have handy tips and other great information for day to day life. Today I was reading Get the Most Out of Your New Town. I thought it was pretty interesting. Here were their main suggestions:

1. Get a local phone number.
2. Subscribe to the local paper
3. Get a map
4. Check out the local restaurants
5. Find the local activities

But here's where it really caught my attention. The section was entitled Jesus and Wine. The title alone was interesting but then it listed a website called meetup.com where you can find connections with other people similar to you in the area. Here's my favorite quote from the article:

Be it beer or wine; darts, dirt or dreams; Mormons, Wiccans or atheists; or whether you're a Republican, Democrat, independent or Libertarian, there's little more than booze, religion and politics that can help you feel right at home again.

Really?! "Mormons, Wiccans or atheists"? It just makes me think that whoever was creating that list has no idea (or at least some preconceived idea as to) what a Mormon really is.

Plus really, have the Mormons ever been hard to find?! They're always knocking on your door. :)

Off the Charts!

Not to brag or anything but LOOK AT ME! I'm sitting pretty at a 2108 skill level and here's the proof. Elisa (skill level 2000) and Sarah (skill level 1900) got nothing on me. They are pretty the only player that I ever play any more. Actually I was surprised that I could get over a level 2000. You can see in the screen shot above that the chart really isn't made for someone with my skills. Now, I'm addicted to see just how high I can make it.

Seriously, So Blessed!

Lindsay, I finally checked out Seriously, so Blessed! You were right! It is HIL-AR-IOUS! I'm only sorry that I didn't check it out sooner.

For everyone else, "Seriously, so Blessed!" is a blog by a fictitious young newlywed Mormon sister who has the perfect life and wants to share it with the world on her blog. It's only funny if you know someone who is like this. But don't worry I'm sure you know someone that's a match. It's like Legally Blonde for Mormons.

My First Fresh Fig

I was over at my parent's house last night following our weekly family eating out dinner. My mom had just purchased a load of fruit from Costco and she had a large tray of figs that she wanted to share. First she tried to get my brother to take one but since he didn't know where figs rate on the carbohydrates scale, he said he'd pass. Next she asked if I wanted one. I kind of turned my nose up because I had never had a fresh fig and wasn't anxious to try it. (Of course, I've had and enjoyed many a fig newton.) My brother (who wouldn't try one) then urged me on to try it. I caved in and tried one. The peeling was a lot more tender then I expected. I bit into it and chewed a bit. It reminded me a little bit of a kiwi because it was a similar color and seemed to have a bunch of small seeds in it. It was alright. I wasn't loving it but it was okay. I examined the center the fruit a little closer and thought it looked like a bunch of bugs in the middle. My mom reassured me that it was just really ripe. But then I showed her closer view what I thought to be a bug. She agreed that it was a bug and told me to put in the garbage. But then wanted me to try a different one. Since I had already eaten a bug, I thought it couldn't get worse. But this time I sliced it open rather than just taking a big bite. No bugs this time! The funny thing is when it was all over I actually liked the taste the one with bugs more. Should I be concerned? :)

Hasty Hearts and a Sick Ceiling

Tonight several friends and myself gathered to attend a play at the Hale Center Theater in Orem. The play was The Hasty Heart. I mostly tagged along because friends were going and I didn't want to be left out. I was pleasantly surprised with the story line and the acting. The actors were believable and their accents were sufficient for me with the exception of one. The most disturbing part of the evening was looking up to the ceiling before the play began. Eeek! Not only did they have the gross "cottage cheese" ceiling of the 70s, but then there were strategically placed plastic cups glued and/or stapled to the ceiling. As best I could tell they were there to collect rain water when the ceiling leaks? No wonder they are looking to build a new venue. I just hope the old venue can hang in there until they at least start building at Midtown Village.

LDS Church and Facebook?

Apparently there has been a rumor circulating about the LDS Church possibly purchasing Facebook. Have you ever heard a more absurd rumor? I'm mean really! What would the church want Facebook for? Some kind of covert online proselyting? What's even more funny is that KSL felt the need to report that the rumor was not true.

Wii Have a Problem

I've been telling my family that I think I broke a rib while playing Wii Tennis. I was kind of kidding but not really. The right side of my chest hurts when you press on it in a certain spot. It hurts when I roll over in bed or twist to get up out of bed. So I'm pretty sure that I do have a broken rib. The question is "Could I have really broken it while playing Wii?" I decided to take that question to the Internet. Apparently a broken rib is one of the less serious problems that you could have. The site, Wii Have a Problem, chronicles the various injuries that people have actually inflicted on themselves, others, or even inanimate objects while playing Wii.

Fruit Salsa

Time to share another recipe. This is a great sweet fruit salsa that beautifully complements salty tortilla chips. I've made this several time for various get-togethers and there is rarely any left to take home.

Ingredients:
2 Granny Smith Apples
2 Oranges
2 Kiwi
1 Box of Frozen Strawberries (I think they are 10 oz)
2 Tbsp Apple Jelly

Directions:
Chop all the fruits up into small chunks. But make sure you don't blend it or chop it too small. You want to make sure that it's still chunky. Mix all the fruit together and add the apple jelly. The jelly helps to make it set up a little. Refrigerate before serving. I find the salsa is better when it has a little time for the flavors to mix together a bit. Serve with tortilla chips. The Tostito Scoops work great. Enjoy!

David Archuleta's New Single

So I was checking to see what new releases were out there and look what I found. David Archuleta has already released (at least digitally) his new single, Crush. And be the Archie fan that I am I immediately had to purchase it. I got to say that it works really well for him and what I think is his demographic. See what you think.

Early Signs of Talent

I recently rediscovered a cassette tape (remember those?) that had a recording of me singing and accompanying myself at the tender age of three! (A few years after I started playing the piano as evidenced by the photo above.) I gotta say, I was pretty good. With a few more lessons I'm pretty sure that I would have been the original Josh Groban. See what you think. Enjoy!

Adele - 19

So lately I've really liked listening to Adele. I first heard her Chasing Pavements song on VH1's Top 20 Countdown. I immediately liked that song and decided to try out the rest of her album, 19. To me she sounds a little like Amy Winehouse but vocals are much smoother. And you don't have the icky visual of Amy Winehouse when you hear her music. Check her out. See what you think.

Fearless Fourteen - Janet Evanovich

Janet's done it again. This Stephanie Plum novel is as entertaining as all of the Stephanie Plum series books. This time Lula's engaged and planning a wedding despite the fact that Tank, her "fiance," never actually proposed. And never mind the fact that he doesn't want to marry her. Stephanie is blue. Not sad, just blue. We also meet Brenda who is basically a washed up Britney Spears. Then there's Brenda's stalker, Gary, who is also a self-proclaimed psychic and her cousin. There's Zoot who is responsible for bringing out Stephanie's motherly qualities. Zoot likes to paint his name on anything that doesn't move and a few things that do. Mooner is back and this time he's got a potato gun. So it's basically your run of the mill boring bounty hunter book, Not!
